Why is the availability of publications important for admission?
Why is the availability of publications important for admission? If you have decided to go to a foreign university - be ready: preparation for admission is similar to running a long distance, where you need to use all perseverance, patience, willpower and ingenuity. Hundreds of entrants from all over the world participate in the race known as "Admissions Committee", and only the most intelligent and talented are awarded student seats

What action should I take to become one of those lucky ones?
Of course, you probably already know that you should have a high average score (the higher - the better), you should be fluent in a foreign language and confirm it with an IELTS or TOEFL certificate, write a perfect motivational letter, get impressive recommendations and more.

In this article, we want to consider another important indicator that will increase your odds of admission - availability of articles, publications, participation in various studies and other proof of your outstanding capabilities.

Does everyone need articles and publications for admission?
      No, not everyone
universities do not expect scientific articles from students and school and college graduates. But that doesn't mean that having them won't do you any good.

For example, one of our students who enrolled in the bachelor's "Journalism" programe actively conducted her blog in English and expressed her opinion about pressing social problems, which directly played a significant role in her subsequent admission to one of the leading universities in France and achieving a scholarship.

In our community of students and alumni «Peers Mentorship» you can find students' stories, chat with them directly, as well as ask about publications, or maybe some of them are even ready to help in writing an article...
some specialities initially do not imply the presence of publications. These programs, for example, include vocal, acting, equestrian, etc. And again, their presence will not be superfluous and will only emphasize your activity and motivation.

Well, if you plan to enroll in a master's program, MBA or PhD at a serious university and especially if you expect a scholarship - we advise not to postpone and start this laborious process Right now!
      Where to start?
STEP 1. Decide on the type of publication
If your speciality relates to economic, humanitarian, technical, engineering, social, medical, legal and other "serious" areas, it is necessary for you to first consider the possibility of writing a research article, which should be published in a peer-reviewed publication (ideally Scopus, Web of Science, VAK).

For students of creative specialties (journalism, linguistics, fashion, etc.) a good option can be information or narrative publication, which fully reflects the mindset, talent and creativity.

STEP 2. Decide on the topic
What is important to consider when choosing a topic?

      * it should be directly related to your direction of study

      * the topic should be relevant and interesting, as well as should be devoted to the latest and most important trends that will help "sell yourself" to a university or future scientific supervisor

      * do not forget about novelty (especially in a scientific article) - in your work you need to not merely consider the existing theories and views on this issue (which is also important), but also to contribute, prove or refute the theory in question
STEP 3. To understand in what form and where you can publish it
If you are still studying at university, congratulations, you have loads of opportunities:
      - participate in conferences - based on their results there are usually compendiums of reports or abstracts

      - communicate with teachers - often they are interested in joint publications with students. And co-authorship with a professor and doctor of science will undoubtedly raise the "status" of your article

      - a good opportunity - to publish an article in the framework of a thesis or master's thesis (at some universities it is already an obligatory requirement for thesis protection)

      - do not bypass the scientific and student community, where you can also find colleagues and co-authors, get help and support

-be proactive, try to show your initiative and talents to a maximum extent

If you have already graduated from university and you already have professional working experience...
you could use a practice and analytical-oriented article. It may not be reviewed by Scopus or VAK, and published (free of charge) on one of the Internet portals or websites (a list of them can be found in the Odds section).

Those who are really serious, we advise you to take a closer look at our partner Tuding project - they help you find a mentor among professors from leading universities in the USA and England, under whose guidance you participate in a remote research project, and then you can get a recommendation for admission.
And of course do not forget about social networks! Universities often pay attention to them, so it is in your power to use it to your advantage and create the image of the most cherished entrants of all universities.
STEP 4. Directly writing an article
If you are writing a research article, do not forget to get acquainted with the requirements of GOST and the publishing house.

As for other articles, most often they do not have strict text finalizing requirements.

By the way, we advise you to use one very convenient service to check the correctness of spelling and punctuation - Grammarly. A full list of services and companies that help with verification, writing and publication can be found on our platform.

STEP 5. The use of the results of their works in enrollment
Firstly, be sure to include a list of publications in the resume, do not forget to specify where they are published, if possible, add links. You can look at how to do it better in our CV section

Secondly, publications can be mentioned in your motivational letter or recommendations.

Thirdly, they are definitely needed for admission to PhD and some master's programs, where you may not only need a research proposal (we will consider it sometimes separately), but also you will find yourself a scientific supervisor.

Thus, in this article, we partially discussed the topic of how you can increase your chances through publications and articles. Of course, also do not forget about other results of intellectual work - patents, participation in research works, writing monographs and textbooks, etc.

In other words, don't forget that there are a million opportunities that you can use and we are happy to help you with them!

Good luck! We believe that the university of your dreams is waiting for you!
